Mr. Worm, Señor Gusano
An uplifting and inspiring story that was created after a trip with my family to Oak Glen, California to pick apples right from the orchard.
From this trip, I brought back apples for my students, and shared with them my experience of an apple worm which seemed to be curiously peaking out of an apple to take a look at us. I almost felt as if I had interrupted his lunch. Upon sharing this experience with my students, a story began to develop. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to use as a way to motivate my students in the beauty of reading in two languages.
Hence, Mr. Worm, Señor Gusano came alive in a bilingual book for all children to enjoy. The story is written in English with English and Spanish dialogue. At the end of the book, parents and teachers will find a translation/pronunciation page.
In the story, the curious apple worm discovers that he has been eating ‘magic’ apples from a special little apple tree. Don Pablo, the wise owner of the orchard tells the worm that he can have anything if he believes… “Magic is in believing, lo mágico es en creer”… The little worm dreams of flying like a butterfly.
So, after eating the ‘magic’ apples, the little worm’s dream comes true. He grows wings magically, and flies like a butterfly. While flying around, he meets the love of his life, gets married, and the happy couple have a little baby worm. He is now Mr.Worm, Señor Gusano.
There is a tragedy in the story which you must read about. But, like in all good stories, it all turns out. And the Worms, Gusanos live happily ever after.
You will find fun, love, and humor while being touched with an inspirational message that “dreams can come true when you believe”.
This is a delightful book created for children and can be fully enjoyed by all. I love reading to my granddaughter Lauren.
Mr. Worm, Señor Gusano is a beautifully illustrated story that will entertain, delight, and teach children of many ages and primary language backgrounds.
- This bilingual book is especially useful for learning Spanish since much of the dialogue is written in both Spanish and English. Children will also delight in the colorful and cheerful illustrations.
A magical book in all ways. Life is full of magical impossibilities as a child. Children will love this book for it opens the doors to being whomever, whatever and however big their dreams take them!
My children love bedtime stories and ever since purchasing Mr. Worm, it has become their #1 nightly request. Thank you for a wonderful story with an empowering message for all ages.
Finally... A children's book that is beautifully illustrated with a powerful message that introduces Spanish as second language. I read this to my students and have noticed a increase in their bilingual speaking and comprehensive skills.

I dedicate this book to my dear friend, Leana Hardgrave.
It all started with Leana’s youthful curiosity on an apple-picking trip to Oak Glenn, California. As Leana and I were picking apples, we noticed a little worm poke its head out of an apple, and seemingly looked up at us as if it had its own curiosity and personality. Most people would not have paid much attention to a silly little apple worm, but Leana’s gentle nature gave it importance. That little worm is now living in this warm and sensitive story called “Mr. Worm, Señor Gusano”.
